Gorguts - Obscura (1998)

One of my first trips to Chicago's Metal Haven (RIP) was part of a lunch date with my mother. I had recently gotten into "technical death metal" and I was obsessed with Cryptopsy. I hadn't heard Gorguts, but I was aware that they were another totally crazy French-Canadian death metal band. A promo copy of Obscura was in the used section, and I bought it (along with a dumb Marduk CD I think). I put it on in the car ride home, and my mom immediately asked me to turn it off.

This record is absolutely insane. So heavy. So weird. Consistently one of my favorite albums ever since that fateful day what must have been eight years ago.

When I first heard this record I just couldn't comprehend the work these dudes put into it. I'm so glad you posted this. I haven't heard it in forever. I have never really listened to Cryptopsy. Recommend me a record of theirs.

Cryptopsy album to listen to None so Vile.

Absolutely "None so Vile." Then "Blasphemy Made Flesh." "Whisper Supremacy" & "And Then You'll Beg" are both kind of retarded and kind of awesome. I bet you'd like them.

Hearing Obscura played live was one of my highlights of MDF last year, their 3 new songs sounded amazing live too.

See I kind of imagine Gorguts just sounding absolutely terrible live due to the density of their songs, but I would love love love to see them.

Gorguts were great @ MDF, but their sound was so muddy because they played at an outdoor stage that was sandwiched between the Sonar and the Jones Falls Expressway. Nevertheless, they put on a great show despite the sound issues. Seeing Luc Lemay shred was mind blowing and educational.

So awesome. The bass player cracks me up.

You guys should check out Negativa. Negativa was formed by Gorguts members after the band split up. The music for the most part is a continuation of the Gorguts sound as found in their last 2 albums. It's just an Ep but it still sounds like Obscura.

Tru that Negativa EP is fantastic.
